We came across another hidden gem in the area around Vagabond Lodge and Golden BC. It is a canoe and kayak rental company called Columbia Wetlands Adventures. They are based on the Columbia River about 20 minutes south on Hiway 95. And wow...what a spot. 6 of us went out for the day and rented 3 canoes and were out for about 3 hours. Because of the high water, the owners marked out a way for us to cut across the small lakes and mashes formed and did a big loop. At one point we were in a big lake and in the middle is a raft which we tied up to and had a picnic and a swim. The company also does a wildlife viewing float trip. We have had some guests who have done the trip and they love it. All sorts of wildlife along the river. Here are some photos. Amazing spot with suspension bridge and little floating walkways through the forest and small marshes. Disneyland couldn't do it much better. Here is my video from our trip with some of your friends here at Kicking Horse Resort.

A great hike to do in the area, is to the top of Terminator 2(T2). The best part is the Gondola gets you to the top of the mountain. So the grunt work is basically done. After that, it is a nice ridge walk into the opening of SuperBowl(15 minutes). The next section is having to follow more or less a goat trail for about another 20 minutes to the top of the mountain. It is a trail that the Resort should work on but so far haven't unfortunately because it truly is a fabulous spot at the top. There are a few tricky sections where the rock is loose and you have to be a little extra careful with footing, but nothing serious. There are no big drops or anything like that. If you miss a step, you may slide a bit. Walking sticks are really helpful. The views from the top are outstanding looking in every direction. From the top of the mountain you can actually hike all the way to the canyon and down into Nicholson which is just south of Golden. But here is video of our hike. Hope you like it. Well worth it.
One of the many fabulous things you can do around Golden BC and Vagabond Lodge is to go for a canoe trip on the Columbia River. You can rent a canoe at Columbia Valley Canoes which is located just a new minutes south of Golden. From there you basically float down the river until you come to the airport and pull in. The owner, Heidi comes and picks you up and takes you back to your car. The cost was $60 per 2 person canoe. Our trip was 3 hours. Great deal. We canoed into a lake, the river has created at one point and some of us(not me) jumped into the lake and went for a swim. Water is crystal clear. The tricky part is getting back into the canoe but they managed to do it without dumping anyone. Here is video of our trip.
A great day today. Temperatures are getting nice and warm and sunny skies. I had a real treat today. I went on a trail ride in the Blaeberry Valley today. It is the valley to the North of Golden and very historical. It was the original fur trading route through the rockies and was discovered in the early 1800's. A friend from Golden owns a trail riding company called Bear Corner Adventures. www.bearcornerb-b.com. BJ is a former warden in Yoho National Park and has been in operation here for about 10 years. He took me a 4 friends on a 3 hour ride along the Blaeberry River. The scenery is fabulous. He can do overnight trips up the Howse Pass. Here is a video I put together of our trip.
