A nice blizzard rolled through Kicking Horse This morning. Puked snow until about 12.30 which is when I went up for a couple runs. Fresh Tracks all over the place. Warming up though in the afternoon. I think I picked the best time, before it started to get heavy. This time of the year...looks like all sorts of little fronts rolling through in the next few days.

It has been snowing heavily all morning here at Kicking Horse. Temperature has been holding at about 1C. Predictions were for a pretty major dump since there are some low pressure systems dumping a lot of rain on the coast. Hope the temperatures stay cool. Still a couple weeks left of skiing here. We have a Spring Rate of $202.50 plus tax. (double occupancy and 2 night minimum.) I went up for a few runs yesterday. I hiked up a bit into Super bowl. Visibility was the biggest issue since it was snowing off and on. North Facing slopes have the best snow since we have had some warmer weather in the past few days. A fabulous few days here. Warmer temperatures, sunny sky's and still a lot of great snow to be had. I went up this afternoon for a couple runs and was surprised I could still find some fresh powder here and there and the tracked snow was still nice. Going later in the afternoon was certainly the key. I am sure the morning wasn't as nice. Even the bottom part of the hill was fine. A few patches of hard packed but that was it. Snow is holding up great and more snow is predicted later this week. A new area that has been added to the resort this year is "T2" or Terminator 2" It involves a hike to the top of a mountain they call Terminator 2 and accesses some amazing runs. It is a challenge to get to the top and certainly is not for everyone which is good. If it is was easy everyone would be doing it. Narrow path and in a couple places very steep and difficult to get any sort of foot-hold. They have a rope at the last little section to pull yourself up which is a must. But the scenery is stunning and the runs are fabulous. I did it for the first time a few days ago and wasn't disappointed. I may not do it for awhile but I am glad I did it. Woke up to a nice dusting of snow and then it started to come down with big flakes all morning. At the same time the temperature dropped to about 0C. I went up about 12.30 and it turned out to be one of the better days I have seen for the past couple weeks. About 10cms of fresh light snow and nobody on the slopes and because of the cooler temperatures it was really nice and soft and fluffy. I made two runs into Feuz Bowl and it was outstanding. Nice to have a surprise now and then. After a beautiful sunny day yesterday, the clouds rolled back in with some snow in the morning. Left a few cms of fresh powder on the slopes. I went up later in the day for a couple of runs and it was really nice. Thought it may be a bit icy on the lower slopes but that wasn't the case. I did bubbly with some nice soft bumps and then headed into Feuz bowl. Very good there too. Hill is deserted. Supposed to continue to get some snow most of the week. Nothing serious but enough to keep it soft. Guests came from Revelstoke and said the runs there were quite icy. The sun finally came out at Kicking Horse. It seems as if we have been in the clouds for the entire winter. And of course that isn't a complaint because it means snow and we have had a lot of it. But yesterday was a sunny day for a change and it was a real treat. I went up about lunch-time and decided to head into Whitewall which is off the ridge into Feuz Bowl. It is all white so visibility is a big key. The snow was really nice in there with the slope facing North. Still some nice soft fluffy powder to be had. Our jazz group, the Parson Jazz Cooperative has a couple gigs this weekend. Saturday Night we are playing next door at Corks from 4.30 to 6.30 for a fundraiser for the Nordic Club and then Sunday afternoon at top of the Mountain from 2-4pm. Should be fun. Warmer weather and that seems to be the story for the next few days. We had a few cms of new snow in the past few days at the top. I went up later in the afternoon for a couple runs. Visibility was limited with some light snow and cloud cover so I just headed for the trees and slightly lower, out of the clouds. Snow was really nice and light. And on the way down headed into Feuz bowl and it was all good. Great day at Kicking Horse skiing. But it really doesn't matter. What does matter is what has happened in Japan. Our thoughts are with those people. Everything else is unimportant. Temperatures have warmed up a lot and the snow keeps coming down. Snowed all day yesterday and most of the day today with accumulation of about 20cms or so in some places. I took a run later in the day and off the top it was especially nice with boot-top powder. Bottom part started to get a bit heavier but that is expected this time of the year. Temperature was about plus 2C at Vagabond Lodge. Great day at Kicking Horse. Sun came out and temperatures were around 0C at the bottom. And with about 40cms of new snow over the past week it was fabulous skiing. I went out with some guests for a few runs after lunch and went into SuperBowl, Feuz Bowl and then Double-header and they were all good. It was also a demo day for Salomon and Blizzard and I tried 3 different skies. Fun doing that. These are all skis for next year. Things are quieting down here at Vagabond Lodge but the conditions are so good. |
