Nice Sunny day here at Kicking Horse. After all the snow in the past week, it was a treat to get a sunny day. I went up for a ski about 12.30. It has been really busy at the resort and I am not much for lift lines so I haven't been skiing for about 5 days but with the sun and new snow, and no lift lines I couldn't resist. I headed into Superbowl which has been closed for the last week or so. Avalanche danger is really high. Great snow. More is on the way. I love this time of the year.

We have a great bunch of guests here helping us ring in the new year. Guests are from Germany, Italy, France, Boston and even a few Canadians from Calgary. Most ended up not going out and decided to hang out around our bar and watch the fireworks from the balcony. Nice atmosphere. Ski conditions are really good, although high avalanche danger. It cooled off a bit today and was nice and sunny. More snow is predicted later in the week with warmer temperatures again. It is time for me to get back skiing now.
Another 8cms of snow last night. Pretty warm at the bottom though hovering around plus 2C. I didn't get skiing yesterday but guests commented about how sticky the snow was at the bottom. Strange for this time of the year. But the forecast calls for cooler temperatures and snow instead of rain.
It was made official last night. Kicking Horse is now part of the RCR Group. RCR owns a number of resorts in Alberta, BC and Quebec, including Fernie and Nakiska. Click Here for Details. January is a great time for skiing here. We have some nice Stay and ski packages available. I went skiing with Patrick who owns Selkirk Sports at Kicking Horse. Great spot for getting some demos and they do an awesome job with customer service. We highly recommend using Selkirk Sports and all guests of Vagabond Lodge receive a 10% at his shop. I managed to get him on video. Sun has come out and the temperatures have dropped to about -9C. Beautiful sunshine. But from what I can see in the forecast, weather is supposed to change in the next few days with more snow predicted. Weatherman is always right?? Hard to believe it is almost 8 years since I finished with TSN and moved to Golden. Managed to come across my last day with TSN and here it what it was like. I forgot some of the stuff I used to do with them. Woke up yesterday to a nice squall that blew through Kicking Horse for the Morning. At one point it was a white-out. When the sun came out about lunch time it had dumped a few more cms of snow. Feuz bowl is now open and apparently really nice. I haven't made it there yet. Temperatures are still moderate for this time of the year around -5C or so. Here is short video from yesterday.
Woke up to a light snow this morning and it is beginning to pick up. We are supposed to be getting a few more cms today. Conditions are really good from top to bottom now, although yesterday when I went up for a few runs, Feuz Bowl is still not open. I was talking to some ski patrol and apparently it will be open today. They are still trying to get all the potential avalanches down before opening to the public. Good move. Here is my video from yesterday.
Big news here at Kicking Horse. The resort is being sold to RCR which is Resorts of the Canadian Rockies. That company already owns a number of resorts in Canada including Fernie and Nakiska and Kimberly. The company is owned by one of the wealthiest men in the world Murray Edwards who is involved in the Oil Industry and also is part owner of the Calgary Flames hockey club. This could be huge for the Resort. Resort has been owned by Ballast Nedam which is a Dutch construction company. Here is a link to more details.
Super Bowl, which is the Bowl at the South End of Kicking Horse opened today. I went in, with a guest of ours to check it out. Because it hasn't been skied and the snow has set-up, it was somewhat tricky and you had to watch for the rocks just under the snow. The best part was the lower section, when you get into Terminator. It is in really nice shape. Snow is nice all the way to the bottom and you can still find some powder on the edges of the run. Snow is predicted over the next couple days.
We managed to get a couple more cms of snow overnight and there was a light snow for most of the day. I went up for a few runs and it was really nice. No deep powder but I did my first run of the year on "double header" and also "race place" which are basically on the opposite ends of the resort and they are really nice all the way to the bottom. The conditions for this time of the year are really good. Mind you if we had some busy days, it may change quickly but that shouldn't happen until just before Christmas. Lots of time for a good dump of snow. Here is first video of the ski season from Friday dec. 9th. Tomorrow is the day!! Kicking Horse is open for the season. I haven't hit the slopes yet but from all reports it is the best early-season conditions for a long time. Friend told me, he can't remember such good conditions and he has been skiing here for 20 years. He goes back to the Whitetooth ski Area days before it became Kicking Horse. I am posting a video I came across the other day and it is well worth watching. It was shot in Nelson and Rossland and is certainly the most imaginative ski related video I have seen. He spent a lot of time on this with all sorts of great cutaways, great angles, closeups and good music. Very impressive and the setting is so unique. All the ski videos are basically the same nowadays. Strap a Go-Pro to your helmet, and away you go. Put some horrible music on it(showing my age) and you have a ski video. Take a look at this. I think you will like it. |
