We had a real treat tonight. One of our neighbours at Vagabond Lodge along with her daughter Sloan came and sang some Christmas carols for us. Nice. We have some great guests for Christmas including a family from Lethbridge in southern Alberta, who have come here for Christmas for a number of years. It is such a treat when we get return guests, especially at this time of the year. We have a young couple from Calgary who are cross country skiing here for Christmas as well as a Family of 3 from Germany. We are going to have some fun.
A beautiful day at Kicking Horse. I managed to take a few more photos today. Our recent family tradition on Christmas eve is cheese fondue and a snowshoe. Can't wait. Enjoy and have a "Cool Yule" The photos below tell the story. One of those days where everything is right in world. At least in our world.
As a friend once said "it sure does suck to be us." Powder in the forecast tonight and tomorrow. Avalanches are a reality when you live in the mountains. And the worst news is when you hear that someone has been killed by one near you. And that is what happened late yesterday afternoon. We began to hear about this late yesterday afternoon. I had heard a helicopter buzzing around for awhile and hadn't thought too much about it. But about half an hour later a friend phoned who had some knowledge of what was happening and told us an avalanche had come down near the resort and there could be a fatality. That fact was confirmed a little later on in the evening. We have since learned the skier was a 29 year old from Alberta who was not wearing an beacon which searchers can find quickly. It took the searchers close to an hour to find his body with probes. He was skiing in an out-of-bounds area near Kicking Horse Resort.
![]() Yes it is that time of the year. Christmas is almost here and we have been getting some nice snow off and on for the past week. We had some guests roll in last night who had been in the Fernie Area and the conditions were not that great. I guess while we were getting snow, they were getting rain. We have gotten about 50 cms in the past week and it is continuing to snow lightly all day and from the forecast it is to keep up for a few more days. I don't think any big dump but a few cms every day is nice. It was a little chilly today when I went up for a run. About -12C. Overall the conditions are good with still some powder stashes close to the trees on the side of the slopes. It hasn't been busy so the snow will stay nice. The hill actually needs a lot of skiing, to pack the runs. Right now, when you fall down, your poles go right down when you try and stand up. As someone said today, this was the first day of the ski season. The past few days was just a warmup. We woke to over 20 cms of powder. And I had to do some quality control and went skiing with Patrick and Josh from Selkirk Sports. Knee Deep powder. We had some fun. Also my first video of the season. 20 cms of Fresh Snow overnight and more predicted in the next few days. I love it when it snows on Sunday Night. Giddy Up!! Kicking Horse and Vagabond Lodge are open officially for the winter. Today was the first day of operation for the resort on a daily basis with closing date of April 20th. Nice long season this year. I made my first run of the season too and was pleasantly surprised how good the conditions are. I have certainly skied on a lot worse. Lots of good snow at the top and even some powder. Obviously with nobody here yet, there is powder everywhere. There are a few rocks and twigs you have to watch for as you get lower down but nothing serious. Best part is snow is predicted off and on for the next week.
Reminder we still have some room at the Inn for New Years. Give us a call 250 34 2622 or email info@vagabondlodge. ca. It was a cold "Sneak Preview" weekend here at Kicking Horse. Temperatures were around -20C so needless to say it a lot of people stayed away from having 1st tracks of the season, including me. "Been there, Done that." From all reports conditions are pretty good. But things are shaping up nicely for the official opening of the resort for the season, this Friday December 13th. The weatherman is calling for a nice warming trend starting tomorrow and snow off and on all week long. Looks like about 20cms in the next few days. If you are looking for that great New Years Getaway, we still have some rooms available. Give us a call here toll free North America 1 866 944 2622 or 250 344 2622 or you can email me at ken@vagabondlodge.ca We have some fun there at Vagabond Lodge. A group of us called ourselves the Kicking Horse Veterans(old farts) Free-ride team. Here is a video of one of our days out on the slopes from last season. |
