New Years hit Vagabond Lodge at 4pm. We have a family from Madrid Spain staying with us for 2 weeks and they went on-line to their home city to do the count-town. For the final 12 seconds, they have 12 grapes and eat 1 grape each second. And of course they have the bubbly too. Madrid had a million people in the downtown area to celebrate. Amazing. Good job by Kicking Horse with their fireworks. We stood on our deck and watched them. We also had some of our own which looked pretty good too. Survived another year!!!

On a busy day on the slopes, which really doesn't happen very often, you can find a number of things to do if you don't want to stand in line. One of my favorites is to go snowshoeing. The resort has a designated trail, but in reality you can make your own pretty well anywhere. Just down the road from the Resort is a little recreational area at Cedar Lake. In the summer it is a great cross country mountain biking area and in the winter very popular with cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Fabulous spot. We went recently out our son Shane and his wife Tara and 3 dogs. Everyone had a blast especially the dogs. We had about 10cm of fresh snow overnight and then it kept coming for most of the day. Probably about another 10cm. Probably the busiest day of the year on the slopes but I went through singles line and was on the gondola in 5 minutes. Snowing lightly most of the day. I went up in the afternoon for a couple runs. Terminator was really nice with nice fresh snow. They are calling for about 20 cms over the next couple days. Maybe the busiest day so far this season but really not much of a lineup. We still have a couple rooms available for New Years. Give us a call or tell a friend. $275 per night double occupancy. 3 night minimum. One of the great things to do in the area is snowshoeing. You can go right from our door and make trails anywhere in the trees. Along with son Kori and his fiance Elaine that is what we did yesterday. It was a fabulous afternoon. A lot of solitude.  Great day for Christmas Day. Nice and sunny for most of the day at the top. Great day to spend with friends and family. Awesome Christmas eve. Went with our son Kori and his fiance to a little cabin on the nordic Trails by snowshoe about 7pm in the dark. Took about 20 minutes to get there. Had all the fixings for awesome cheese fondue that dates back to great restaurant in Leysin Switzerland. Got a fire going and candles and a bottle of white wine. Then a couple hours later made our way back home. It doesn't get much better. Kicking Horse Opened some new terrain for the first time a few days ago. It is a bowl to the south of the resort, called Superbowl. It involves a 10 minute hike to get into the bowl and from there you ski down onto Terminator which is one of my favorite runs. I went and checked it out for the first time, today. Nice!! This has nothing to do with skiing at Kicking Horse or Vagabond Lodge. I just love this british humour. Remember the 2 ronnies a long time ago. Well...this is the one Ronnie and is still great. enjoy Some low cloud cover in the morning here at Kicking Horse. I went up about 1pm with a neighbour Bob for a few runs. It was actually quite cool at the top with a bit of a breeze and temperatures about -15C. I didn't really come prepared for the cold temperatures. As long as you were moving it was okay, but the chair ride was longer than I wanted. Snow conditions at the top is really nice. We had some powder a few days ago and it hasn't been very busy so still some nice soft snow and I was surprised by how quiet it was on the hill. I guess everyone is Christmas shopping. There is supposed to be some snow coming in a couple days. Reminder if you are looking for a New Years trip, we still have a couple rooms left. The resort always has some special events planned with a nice dinner and live music at the top of the mountain and fireworks in the plaza area. Woke up to about 8-10 cm of fresh snow and it kept snowing all day. The skiing got better and better as the day progressed. |
