Where the Heart Is

Barbecue with Friends on T2

The End is here.
Another summer has come to a close and after Sunday September 27th, Kicking Horse and Vagabond Lodge will take a break until ski season which is scheduled for December 12th.
One of my favourite spots nearby both summer and winter is T2 which is a mountain within a nice hike from the top of Kicking Horse Resort.  The resort a few years ago built a great summer hiking trail to the top with a series of rock steps.  It is still a good work-out to get to the top but more accessible to a lot of people.  A fitting finish to the season was to hold a barbecue at the top of T2.  It didn't take much to gather a dozen or so friends to head up earlier in the week on a nice fall day.  Even friend Richard carried a little barbecue to the top.  Fabulous afternoon.  The next time I will head up there will be with skis on my back.  Can't wait.

Still Some Hiking Left

The countdown is on to the end of the summer season for Kicking Horse and for Vagabond Lodge.  The gondola, grizzly bear refuge, Eagle's Eye Restaurant and Vagabond Lodge all shut down on September 27th until ski season.  So my days are numbered to go to the top and hike the ridges.  We have had some snow off and on the past few days at the top of the mountain.  The sun came out for a few minutes  today so I took a chance and went for a hike to the south on the ridge and it was outstanding.  There was a little snow but nothing serious.  And nobody on the trail.  Great views of the snow covered mountains.  Loved it.  Here are a few photos of my hike today.
Kicking Horse is scheduled to open for the ski season on December 12th and that means Vagabond Lodge too.  Reminder we have an 10% Early Bird savings if you book before Oct. 31st.  Give us a call here at Vagabond Lodge 250 344 2622 or email info@vagabondlodge.ca

Riding the CBT Trail

The old farts strike again.  It is one of those things I have wanted to do for the past few years.  I wanted to check out the mountain biking trails just down the road from Vagabond Lodge.  The Golden Cycling Club has done an amazing job putting in more and more trails each year.  The big one for distance is the CBT Trail which means Columbia Basin Trust which is where they managed to get some of their funding I assume.   Larry, a part time neighbour and friend and retired Doctor(always thinking ahead), has done a lot of mountain biking.  I had talked to him a few times  earlier this summer about taking me on the trail. With some nice sunny weather yesterday was the day.  We first took one car down to the lower parking area which is just by the Columbia River at the bottom of the hill.  We then came back up and jumped on our bikes and rode down the road to the trail head of the CBT trail which is a few km away.  Then it was basically a single track for the next hour or so.  There are a few wooden bridges to cross(I walked a couple) and some challenging terrain.  The downhill "switchbacks" were the trickiest.  But we managed to come away "unscathed."  Loved the ride and can't wait to do it again. The length is 9.4 km and the elevation change is about 300 metres.  It is very popular either direction so  you have to watch out.  Highly recommended.  Click Here or on the photo for a video of our trip.

Summer Winding Down

One of our busiest summers in 12 years here is coming to a close.
It's that time of the year when I start to think winter.  As much as I enjoy the summer, I love the winter here. We have had a change in weather in the past few days which was much needed.  Forest fire smoke from Washington State blanketed the area for over a week and it was not pleasant and sometimes downright horrible.  And finally the rains came a few days ago and cooler temperatures and we could actually see the mountains for the first time for awhile.
Vagabond Lodge will be open daily until September 27th and after that Lori and I are shutting it down until ski season which is usually the first weekend of December.  We plan to do some relaxing, visiting friends and family and even have a week in Mexico planned in November.
But in the interim we are busy getting ready for ski season which means making sure our regular guests and new ones are taken care of.  As usual we have a 10% Early Bird Savings in effect until October 31st.  Give us a call toll free in Canada  1866 944 2622 or 250 344 2622 or email info@vagabondlodge.ca and book your stay. This savings is only for direct bookings only and not available through on-line or through wholesalers and requires full payment in advance.
We are also working this winter with a company called Kicking Horse Powder Tours and offering some inclusive packages throughout the winter. They include everything from Calgary Airport pickup and transportation here, resort skiing, back-country skiing, meals and more.  Click Here for more info.

Enjoy some of the last winter hi lights in this video I put together recently for a TV commercial.
