A Via Ferrata is a new addition to Kicking Horse Resort. It is a secure climbing route with imbedded cables, and steps. I recently had a chance to check it out. Outstanding. This is a video of the 4 hour route. Highly recommended.
A Via Ferrata opened at Kicking Horse on July 1st and I finally got a chance to try it. Outstanding. Lisa, who was our guide took a group of us on the Ascension Route which is the 4 hour route. Via Ferrata is a secured climbing route with cables and ladders and steps embedded in the rock. Lisa said the company who built it, said this was the most difficult challenge they had ever had, and they have built these around the world. The rock kept burning out the bits because of the hardness of the rock. You are always cabled in, from start to finish which is pretty cool. If you are afraid of height, then this is not for you. I just never looked down. Highly recommended.

One of my favourite hikes in the area is the Burgess Pass in Yoho National Park. The trail head is a few different spots but probably the easiest is at Emerald Lake. This video is one I did a few years ago with some friends Larry and Cindi. It took us about 9 hours to get back to Emerald Lake. Toughest part for me, was coming down from the top for about 4 hours. Tough on the knees. But the views are outstanding especially of Emerald Lake itself. You go through the Burgess Shale area which is closed off to the general public. The only way you can access the actual shale is doing the hike with a naturalist with Parks Canada. On this hike we added a couple more hours by going to Yoho Lake to have lunch. It is a little off the trail but a great spot to have lunch. You can also end up just outside of Field on the transcanada highway which I have done before. All good.
What a great hike. This is a new one or at least a new version. You could always scramble up to the top of Terminator but now there is a great trail to follow. Terminator Peak is the first peak to the south of the top of Kicking Horse and is one of my favourite hikes in the winter. But now it is one of my favourite summer hikes too. The resort has done an amazing job of building this trail with mostly rock steps which must have been quite a chore. From the top of the gondola to the top of Terminator Peak, you can do it in about 30 minutes and the views are outstanding in all directions. There is one section that is quite narrow if you have vertigo. The trail also is part of the Via Ferrata(next on my list) which is a new addition to the resort this summer. You get a great view of the suspension bridge which is the first part of the Via Ferrata. You will notice that in the video. Short hike but you get a big bang for your buck. Well worth it.
