One of the many fabulous things you can do around Golden BC and Vagabond Lodge is to go for a canoe trip on the Columbia River. You can rent a canoe at Columbia Valley Canoes which is located just a new minutes south of Golden. From there you basically float down the river until you come to the airport and pull in. The owner, Heidi comes and picks you up and takes you back to your car. The cost was $60 per 2 person canoe. Our trip was 3 hours. Great deal. We canoed into a lake, the river has created at one point and some of us(not me) jumped into the lake and went for a swim. Water is crystal clear. The tricky part is getting back into the canoe but they managed to do it without dumping anyone. Here is video of our trip.

A great day today. Temperatures are getting nice and warm and sunny skies. I had a real treat today. I went on a trail ride in the Blaeberry Valley today. It is the valley to the North of Golden and very historical. It was the original fur trading route through the rockies and was discovered in the early 1800's. A friend from Golden owns a trail riding company called Bear Corner Adventures. www.bearcornerb-b.com. BJ is a former warden in Yoho National Park and has been in operation here for about 10 years. He took me a 4 friends on a 3 hour ride along the Blaeberry River. The scenery is fabulous. He can do overnight trips up the Howse Pass. Here is a video I put together of our trip.
Beautiful Sunny day at Kicking Horse. Actually the day started off cloudy and a few snow flakes coming down. But about 10am, turned into a gorgeous day. One of my neighbours here at Kicking Horse, Larry wanted to go for a few runs. We decided to head over to Superbowl which is the newest terrain here at Kicking Horse and is about a 10 minute hike. I had only done it once before earlier in the season when the snow wasn't that great. But now the conditions are fabulous. At the end of the bowl we both looked up on the Ridge and saw some great ski runs we had never done before coming from the top. Actually Larry had been there once before a few years ago and with the sun shinning and lots of snow over the past week, we decided to head up to the top of Terminator Ridge and then ski back down into Superbowl. It is about a 30 minute hike up to the top. A few places it is a little scary but we managed to get to the top. After a bit of a rest we found a great line with still some nice soft snow about up to your knees in places. It is not something I would do on a regular basis but certainly on a day like today with great visibility and great snow, it was well worth the effort. Woke up to about 8-10 cm of fresh snow and it kept snowing all day. The skiing got better and better as the day progressed. Another Ski Season Kicking Off at Kicking Horse today. We had 32 cm of fresh snow over the past couple days. And then the sun came out. You can't ask for more. You still have to be careful until it gets skier packed. I was maybe overly cautious but it doesn't take much to catch a ski on a rock just barely under the snow. It is a long season. Pretty quiet for opening day, but I suspect tomorrow will be a lot busier. Just to get you pumped, here is a fun day I had last winter with some locals. Just to get you pumped for the Upcoming Ski season, Golden Nordic club has an amazing facility just a few minutes away from Vagabond Lodge here at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. and every year a highlight is their annual Huckleberry Loppet. They had a record turn-out last year with all ages and calibre Nordic Skiers. Here is my video from last year. It will be held again this year.
