We have had some amazing weather this summer. Last year we were hiking in the Snow in Lake Ohara at this time and this year we went for a hike in Glacier National Park on a 30 plus C day. Glacier is about 45 minutes west of Vagabond Lodge and features some of the best high alpine hikes in the Rockies. They are all pretty tough with a lot of elevation gain over a short period of time. Four of us started our hike to Glacier Crest about 11.30 in the morning from the campsite just west of Roger's Pass at the Illecillewaet Campsite. From this spot there are a number of great hikes that start here. It was also the site of Glacier House which was a big hotel that was build by CP Rail in the late 18 hundreds. They still have some remnants of the hotel and old photos. It looked like a really fabulous place to stay. It was torn down in the late 1920's unfortunately.
The hike is pretty well a switch back for most of the way and you end up looking across and down on a number of Glaciers. It took us about 6 and a half hours return although we did stop and pick some huckleberries along the way. It was really a hot day which took the toll on me as I started to suffer thigh cramps on the way down. It is a tough hike but well worth it. Enjoy the photos.
